This Transgender Awareness Week, we took a step toward in building inclusive communities by hosting a lunch and learn session. Led by Lio, a West Kent resident and member of the transgender community, the session was an eye-opening opportunity to explore the importance of trans-inclusion in our everyday lives.

Lio shared invaluable insights, guiding us through key topics such as:

  • Understanding trans experiences – A deeper look at the challenges faced by the transgender community. From housing discrimination to dealing with misconceptions, Lio highlighted the resilience of trans individuals in the face of significant barriers.
    For instance, 40% of trans respondents have faced transphobia while seeking housing, and 27% have experienced homelessness at some point in their lives​ (Source: TransActual’s “Trans lives survey 2021”).
  • Common misconceptions – Common myths, like the belief that all trans people seek medical transitions or can be easily identified. These points reminded us that each trans person’s journey is unique and personal.
  • Practical steps for trans-inclusion – From displaying and sharing pronouns to respectfully addressing mistakes, Lio provided actionable advice on how we can create more welcoming environments.

Lio also shared personal stories, spoke about his love of theatre, books, and music, underlining the importance of seeing trans people as individuals with passions and skills like everyone else.

This engaging session was a chance to connect, learn, and challenge ourselves to do better.
