As we mark 35 years of West Kent, we’re looking back on the excellent work our development team carried out in 2020 with the building of new homes at Faversham Lakes. This development has allowed us to meet housing needs within the area successfully.
Faversham Lakes sits on the former gravel works and gunpowder factory in the north Kent town of Faversham. The new community includes 330 one, two, three and four-bedroom homes, a mixture of shared ownership, affordable rent and private ownership.
The development, built in partnership with Anderson Group has a strong community feel, with spacious open-plan designs, generous gardens and within walking distance of the landscaped parkland. The site is complete with two original cannons and Grade II listed work buildings restored to acknowledge the site’s rich history.
The establishment of this new community is the outcome of good quality and trusted partnership working; not only between West Kent and Andersons, but also between us and the new residents. We have all worked hard to bring the whole community together- both West Kent residents and owner-occupiers- supporting them to come together as a thriving community with resident-led events and groups.
The development also won Best Large Development at the First Time Buyer Awards 2021, as well as Excellence in Development and Regeneration at the Kent Housing Awards and was shortlisted for a UK Housing Award in 2022.
The Kent Housing Group judging panel said: “Any development is about embracing the new, but it can also be about fusing it with the old. This scheme stood out in an incredibly competitive category because it redeveloped a disused quarry, its clear engagement, its enhanced community facilities, and the way it embraces its surroundings, sitting among the former Oare gunpowder works and many listed buildings".
We're pleased to be continuing our partnership work with Anderson and the Faversham Lakes community to work on phase three of the development.
